The semi-finals are due to be played on Friday 4th June, between 5 pm and 7 pm. The third-place playoff and the grand final follow on Monday 7th June from 7pm onwards.

The group stages with 30 teams entered saw some terrific performances. Progressing to the quarterfinals (which unfortunately took place just as we were going to press with this issue) were Canada, Egypt A and B, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Germany and the UAE. You can see the slide shows if the game here dome.ae.

At the end of the group matches Egypt A looked particulary strong, with five wins out of five, 18 goals in the ‘for’ column and only two against, and the status of hot favourites. Omer Deiban of the UAE was the top scorer at that point, however, with six to his name.

The Dome offersa an airconditioned environment for five-or-seven a side matches of FIFA Grade 1 artificial turf in a giant inflatable tent on the Rawdhat development on Old Airport Road. The pitches are not limited to football play and coaching but are also being booked for hockey, cricket and other sports.

She was 84.

Kamenshek, who was named as one of the 100 greatest female athletes of the 20th Century by Sports Illustrated for Women, was an outstanding fielder and hitter for the Rockford Peaches, one of the many teams of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), which paid women to play baseball from 1943 to 1954. A left-handed infielder, Kamenshek, who was also called “Kammie,” led the league in hitting twice and played on four championship teams. In 3,736 lifetime at-bats, she struck out only 81 times. She was also fast, in 1946 stealing 109 bases in 107 games (all while wearing a skirt, which all women baseball players did).

Discovered by a scout while she was playing for a Cincinnati softball league, Kamenshek agreed to attend tryouts for the new league at Wrigley Field in 1943. She impressed league organizers and was a founding member of the feared Rockford Peaches, starting out as an outfielder but soon moving to first base. She was a stalwart for the Peaches, playing until 1953. She once turned down an offer from a men’s baseball team in the Florida International League because she believed the offer was a publicity stunt.

When she wasn’t playing baseball, Kamenshek was studying for her degree. She concentrated on physical education and health education, and she received a degree in physical therapy in 1958. She put her degree into practice in Ohio and California (where she was supervisor of physical and occupational therapy for L.A. County Children’s Services) until retiring in 1980.

Kamenshek is included in the AAGPBL display at the Baseball Hall of Fame. She and the league were celebrated in the Penny Marshall-directed hit A League of Their Own, which came out in 1992. In the film, Geena Davis played Dottie Hinson, a character based on Kamenshek (who was an advisor on the set). By: socialstudiesforkids.com

Organizers of the 2012 Summer Olympics have revealed the mascots for the London Games. They are metallic, one-eyed creatures designed to emphasize the host country’s role in the emergence of the modern Olympic Games.

The organizers, including running legend Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organizing Committee, consulted 40 groups of children of all ages in their pursuit of a design. The result is a pair of inspirational figures aimed at being children’s friends throughout the period leading up to the 2012 Olympics, as well as during the Games themselves.

The mascots are named Wenlock and Mandeville. Each has one giant eye, signifying a camera lens, and that’s the extent of the facial features.

Wenlock, the one with the orange stripes, is named for the town Much Wenlock, where Pierre de Coubertin, the inventor of the modern Olympic Games, had the idea. He was visiting Much Wenlock in 1890 and got the idea for the worldwide event after seeing games put on by the town’s residents. On Wenlock’s head is an orange light, meant to look like the lights to be found on top of London taxis.

Mandeville, the blue one, is named for the town Stoke Mandeville, where, in the 1940s, the Paralympic movement began. (The Paralympics follow the Olympics, in the same city, by a few weeks.)

The mascots were introduced to the world in a short animated film, in a story written by Michael Morpurgo, the well-known author of the children’s books Private Peaceful and The Wreck of the Zanzibar. In the film, the mascots take shape from drops of molten steel at the plant where the foundation for the main stadium was made. A steelworker makes the drops of steel into figurines and places them in a window, where a rainbow shines on them and brings them to life. Then, they’re off.

(That’s the Usain Bolt pose, by the way.)

In other news on the 2012 Summer Olympics:

London Mayor Boris Johnson has announced plans for the city to become 100 percent WiFi-enabled by the time the Games start. Workers are soon to start installing thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots in street lights and bus stops, to create a citywide wireless network for Internet access. This will benefit people in London for the Olympics, but it will also be a plus for London residents, who are hoping that the pricing details yet to be announced don’t include a high fee to cover the costs of all that construction.

The London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games has announced that it intends to conduct 5,000 drug tests at the Olympics and 1,200 drug tests at the Paralympics. This would exceed the 3,667 drug tests carried out in 2008 in Beijing.

The odds are against you in most promotions, which is why businesses offer such things as $1 million for a seemingly impossible feat. But some people play anyway, just for the thrill of the chase.

That was certainly the case with Wade McGilberry, who bought a computer baseball game when it first came out and, within a few hours, had scored a million-dollar prize.

McGilberry, who deals in numbers in his job as a records keeper for retirement plans, is a baseball fan, which is why he bought the computer game Major League Baseball 2K10 within minutes of its midnight launch, on March 2. Deep into the early morning, McGilberry had scored the Holy Grail of pitchers everywhere – a perfect game.

In baseball, a pitcher will face a minimum of 27 batters in a game. (That’s 9 innings of 3 outs each.) The vast majority of games feature many more than 27 batters, especially because batters usually get on base, by getting a hit or drawing a walk or being hit by a pitch or reaching base on an error. But none of that happened when McGilberry was pitching. His pitcher mowed down 27 batters in a row.

The feat is extremely rare. In more than 100 years of record-keeping in Major League Baseball, in thousands of games, only 18 pitchers have ever thrown a perfect game. It requires not only great skill but a good deal of luck. The odds against such a feat are 90,000-to-1.

So the computer software company, Take-Two, offered the $1 million prize as part of the promotion of its hot new product: the first person to prove having recorded a perfect game would win. It is likely that advertising executives were confident in the long odds against such a thing as the perfect game. However, McGilberry has proof of his feat. He recorded his game.

Take-Two say they’ll pay up, which is just fine with McGilberry, 23, and his wife, Katy. They say they’ll use the money to pay off their mortgage and start a family. By: socialstudiesforkids.com

Breitling’s seven – strong team of L-39 Albatross trainer jets will Fastin their set belts and perform to the final time in their distinctive blue livery as they prepare for a makeover before the European aerobatics season takes flight in May.

Jacques Bothelin, who created the team 29 years ago, says there will be mixed emotions among the team members when they take to the blue skies over the oasis city of Al Ain. ” Rest assured we will deliver a sign-off performance to remember, featuring close formation flying, opposition passes, solo routines and synchronized manoeuvres. And we look forward to returning in 2011 with a fresh new look and perhaps some surprises too, ” he said.

Bothelin adds that the team’s main target is to entertain the crowd: ” We give the best of ourselves, pushing ourselves to greater daredevil antics each time, to offer the best entertainment we can. It works and the public loves what we do!

The 125 km race is organized by the UAE Cycling Federation in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC). It features teams of six riders from each of 19 countries.

The event starts at 11 am on Abu Dhabi’s Corniche and should finish in the same place about three hourse later. Speaking at a press conference, Sheikh Faisal bin Humaid al Qasimi, president of the UAE Cycling Federation, said he was looking forward to the event. “We have selected the best 18 teams from Europe, Asia and Africa in addition to our team. This will provide us with good preparation for the Asian Cycling Championship which we will host in Sharjah this April.”

The Secretary General of ADSC. Mohammed al Mahmoud also revealed that a huge amount of interest from amateur cyclist in the UAE had forced arganizers to consider adding an amateur event.

“We are trying to work it out and there are no major obstacles. It should run two hours before the professional race so that those competitors can also watch the professional race afterwards; by early next week we’ll decide,” said al Mahmoud.

That was the latest news of sports here in Abu Dhabi which I’m pretty so sure you’ll be excited too to witnesse the said event. This will definitely give you chance to run with the participants and will stop you from using best diet supplements were most of the time you took it to lose some pounds. So, cycle with them now!

Season long leaders Al Jazira finished the year on a high as they overpowered defending champions Al Ahli 1 – 0 to maintain a four point lead at the top of the UFL. Jazira are the only team still undeteated as the season approaches the halfway point. That record never really looed in any danger against Al Ahli, who still seem to be suffering from a disappointing show in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Jazira has a number of good scoring chances before Sobait Khater broke the deadlock with a shot from outside the box that gave the Al Ahli keeper no chance. Elsewhere, in the capital, Al Wahda overcame local rivals Bani Yas 1 – 0 in a pulsating encounter at the Al Nahyan stadium. Bani Yas, who have surprised everyone this term folowwing promotion from the second tier, continued their impressive form but were ultimately undone by a piece of individual brilliance from UAE star Ismail Matar in the 31st minute.

Al Ain left it very late to leapfrog the newcomers into third place, but a goal in the final minute of normal time by their Brazilian midfielder Emerson finally secured 1 – 0 victory over 10 – man Emirates, who had a player sent off in the 41st minute. Al Ain move Bani Yas on goal difference.

The year ends as it began for Abu Dhabi, with all four of the capital’s representatives occupying the top four places in the league.
