sunburn” I have sunburn with blisters: what should I do? How do I know if I need to see a doctor? “ By all means, start by applying cool compresses – such as towel dampened with cool water – to affected areas. Take frequent cool showers or baths to soothe the pain. You can apply aloe or another cooling moisturizing agent; never apply salves, butter or oil to any burn! Apply Calamine lotion to itchy areas. Take over the counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen or you may ask your skin doctors if you need to have a skin care products to substitute the damage of your skin. Drink plenty of water. Leave the blisters intact. Do not break them – that will slow the healing process and increase the risk of an infection. If needed, lightly cover the blisters with a clean nonstick bandage.

While the sunburn and blisters are healing, wear loose natural clothing like silks or light cottons. Harsher fabrics will irritate the skin.

Consult a doctor if:

  1. The sunburn is widespread and severe.
  2. The sunburn affects an infant under the age of 18 months.
  3. The blisters are accompanied by chills, fever, nausea or vomiting – dehydration or/ and infection could be setting in.
  4. The eyes are painful or feel gritty – the cornea could be damaged deeper in the eye.
