“Fear and worries can ruin appetite”
(Specially for people who undergone Cancer Treatment)
Tips include:
- Aim for protein and calories. As a general rule, the main things you should be aiming for in a diet for someone who isn’t well are protein and calories, to provide energy, strength and nutrients to prevent the body from breaking down tissues and help rebuild new tissue.
- Fluids are important. Even if he can’t face food, try to make sure he gets six to eight cups of fluid a day. Milk-based drinks are a good way to get energy, there are loads to choose from these days, from milk shakes to hot drinks. But don’t let him drink too much - you can fill up on drinks and lose an appetite this way.
- Don’t be too worried about variation in the diet. If there are one or two types of food that your husband likes and will eat, there’s nothing wrong with having these every day.
- Think about timing of meals. Many people find their appetite is better in the morning, when they feel brighter or have more energy. Make breakfast a bit more special. Frequent small meals throughout the day - grazing if you like - may go down better than trying to sit down to a large feast.
- Fill in with simple liquid meals which are faster to eat and easier to digest when food is too much effort.
- Stock cupboards with a range of snacks, and place a small selection out in your husband’s room.
- Encourage a bedtime snack, and/or a milky drink. This will also help him to sleep and rest. Tiredness can ruin an appetite.
- Try food in different formats - frozen snacks such as yoghurt, or liquidise fruit into a smoothie.
- Try spicy or zesty foods. Some people find that stronger flavours are most appetising and can stimulate their interest in food. Try ginger, a mild curry flavour or citrus drinks/foods such as grapefruit (this is often useful in stimulating appetite). Having said this, be cautious because for other people strong flavours just make them feel worse!
- When he does feel like eating, make the most of the opportunity and cook something special.
- Avoid too many meals on trays even if he doesn’t feel like getting up. Lying in bed, unwashed and in pyjamas, hardly helps to stimulate a dismal appetite. Lay a small table with flowers and make meals a pleasant and gently sociable occasion.
- If the doctor says it’s all right and he feels like it, add a glass of wine or beer to the menu.
- Gentle exercise, just a stroll around the garden maybe, can help to stimulate an appetite.
- Finally, keep an eye out for common problems, such as mouth sores and teeth troubles, which can stop someone eating.
